Die Attach Adhesive Tutorial - Printing Theory

Printing Theory

The following guide has been developed to help our customers using Dow Corning® brand stencil printable products. Stencil printing our spacer and die attach materials can be done reliably and quickly. However, it is essential that one understands the printing process, the key variables in the process, and how changes in print parameters affect print quality.

Key Terms used in the Printing Business

Squeegee: Blade used to draw material across the stencil.

Squeegee type: Squeegees are usually metal or polyurethane. Polyurethane squeegees with a durometer of 90 Shore A are used for printing.

Blade length: The blade length will determine the force applied per area.

Stencil: Typically a stainless steel tool through which the print media is applied.

Vacuum plate: (or workplate): Used for pulling vacuum on the TAB tape to prevent it from moving during the print process.

Squeege

Defining key parameters:

Print force: The force that the squeegee blade applies to the stencil during the print cycle.

Print speed: The speed that the squeegee travels across the stencil surface.

Snap-off: The distance between the stencil and the surface of the board during the print cycle.

Print Nubbins

Printing nubbins:

Material is printed onto TAB tape through openings in the stencil, called apertures.

The thickness of the stencil and the size of the apertures are chosen depending on the desired nubbin size.

The printing media is sheared as forces act on it in two directions. The force vector is the result of the print force applied on the squeegee and the speed of the print in the print direction.
