Silicone Antifoam Control

Foam can play havoc with your process.

Vessels overflow, raising maintenance costs. Capacity is lost, making production runs less efficient. Food processing times increases. Productivity decreases. And larger, more expensive equipment may be required to compensate for the foam. Silicone foam control agents from Dow Corning have been designed to safely and efficiently eliminate problem foam in food processing applications. Eliminating process foam can increase your productivity, reduce your production costs and, consequently, save your money.

How to select the right agent for your application?

There are many factors to consider when selecting a foam control agent. Factors such as temperature, regulatory requirements and the composition of the foaming system need to be considered. This guide (Excel  format size = 50 KB) has taken many of these factors into consideration and will help you select appropriate foam control agent products for initial testing and final use.

In foam control, silicone has the advantage.

Silicone foam control agents from Dow Corning consistently out-perform their nonsilicone counterparts in terms of versatility, strength, effectiveness, safety and economy. We help you determine the concentration of silicone antifoam (PDF size = 56 KB) to use in your application.

How silicone foam control agents work.

Foam is comprised of bubbles. Silicone foam control agents disperse rapidly through the liquid film that makes up the bubble wall. Because silicone has much lower surface tension (21 dynes/cm) than most fluids, it reduces the surface tension film. The bubbles collapses, and the foam disappear. Silicone foam control agents come in three basics types:

  • Fluids  - Essentially inert, low-toxicity liquids available in a wide range. Best suited for controlling foam in nonaqueous system.
  • Compounds  -  Silicone fluids containing a suspension of finely powdered silica to enhance their defoaming efficiency. Primarily used for combating foam in aqueous systems; may be used in nonaqueous system as well.
  • Emulsions  -  Emulsified compounds. For applications in which water is the predominate phase of the foam.

Regulatory Compliance

All foam control agents from Dow Corning that are recommended for use in food processing or packaging:

  • Comply with FDA Regulation 21 CFR 173.340
  • Are USDA-authorized for use in federally inspected meat and poultry plants
  • Have Kosher certification
  • EPA Status : With the exception of Dow Corning AF Emulsion, the components of these products are listed in 40 CFR 180.1001
